David Sinclair
Many of the scientific and theoretical findings leading to the treatment were made by Dr. John David Sinclair (Ph.D., University of Oregon, 1972; docent, Helsinki University). Dr. Sinclair came to Finland in 1972 to work at the Biomedical Research Center of Alko. His early work was the first to demonstrate clearly that alcohol drinking produces reinforcement (Nature 249: 590-592, 1974) and that it is affected by opiates (Nature 246: 425-427, 1973). He is continuing his research currently at the National Public Health Institute (KTL) in Helsinki.
He has been granted patents in the USA, Europe, Canada, Australia, etc., on the
extinction treatment for
alcoholism with opiate antagonists, including naltrexone. Later discoveries from his research
(e.g., selective extinction) are included also in the method now being used by ContrAl Clinics
